Publication Date: July 1, 2019

Bilingual Review/Revista Bilingüe invites submissions to a special issue entitled “TheBecas Para Aztlán Program: Transnational Experiences of Chicana/o Graduate Students.” This special issue looks at the Becas Para Aztlán Program (BPA), a Mexican government funded program that provided scholarships for Chicana and Chicano students to pursue graduate studies in Mexican Universities. Research on the BPA program documents an important ethnohistorical period of Chicano-Mexicano relations in education and explores the educational, political, and lived experiences of the recipients on both sides of the United States-Mexico border. With this publication, we hope to contribute to the growing body of scholarship on transnational experiences of Chicana/o and Latino students and the impact these experiences have had on their personal and professional lives.

Potential topics include:

  • Educational and lived experiences in the United States and Mexico
  • Chicano–Mexicano relations in politics, culture, and education
  • Career trajectories of BPA recipients
  • Mexican university training and transference to the U.S. context
  • Cultural identity, movimiento politics and community service
  • Educational opportunities in Mexico
  • Transborder crossing stories
